报告题目:Numerical Modeling of Radiation Belt Dynamics
报告人:Alexander Drozdov
报告摘要:
This seminar will focus on the numerical modeling of Earth's radiation belts using the Versatile Electron Radiation Belt (VERB) code. The VERB code, which solves the Fokker-Planck equation, accounts for radial diffusion, local wave-particle integration, loss processes, and convection. The presentation will cover the evolution of the VERB code from early 1D and 2D models to more advanced 3D and the latest VERB-4D simulations. The history of the code’s development and its application in understanding radiation belt dynamics will be discussed.
报告人简介:
Dr. Alexander Drozdov started his scientific career in Moscow State University. His research interests were focused on the radiation effects related to the thunderstorm activity and radiation environment around Earth. After defending his PhD he was involved in the management of several institutional research projects. In 2012 he started working at UCLA on the research of the radiation belts dynamics using the quasi-linear theory. He has applied his knowledge on numerical simulations and background in space physics to improve of existing codes. His current research interests are related to the investigation of the acceleration, loss and transport mechanisms of the radiation belt electrons. In addition, he is actively involved in other research studies involving radiation protection for interplanetary missions and the study of the radiation environment of Jupiter and Saturn.
Furthermore, his research interests include data processing of the Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites, development of the Space Physics Environment Data Analysis Software (SPEDAS) and its python version PySPEDAS, and solar wind shock studies. He contributed to the raw data processing from the UCLA ELFIN-L instrument on board the Lomonosov satellite that was launched in 2016. He is actively involved in the implementation of the Versatile Electron Radiation Belts (VERB) code (whiten in C++) into the Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC). He was invited to participate in the development of Data Analysis Software (DAS, also known as DAS2). Currently, he takes a leadership role in maintenance and community support of the VERB code that is now used by multiple groups in the USA, Germany, UK, Korea, and Brazil.
